Our blog often focuses on products, techniques and maintenance tips – tools we believe will be helpful to our customers. We see each post as one more way to support the wider Habasit community, but today we will step back to take a look at where that community began.
The legacy of Habasit is a story that won’t sit still. This seems fitting for a company committed to movement. Since the beginning of Habasit in Basel, Switzerland in 1946, the company has grown to become a global leader in the belting industry with over 3.700 employees working at more than 30 affiliated companies around the world.
Fernand Habegger, founded the company when he was only 25 years old, along with his future wife, Alice. Working in machine sales after World War II, he had firsthand experience of how complicated belt assembly could be. When he injured himself on a mechanical belt fastener, it was a catalyst for change. Defying convention, he began searching for new solutions in the industry, experimenting with PVC and polyamide which were new to the market. When him and Alice registered the Habasit name shortly after World War II, they set the story in motion.
The company name
The company name is a combination of the first two letters of the second name “Habegger” and “Basel”, the place of registration, and the end is derived from synthetic material names such as “Bakelit” (bakelite). In the following years, Habasit would prove to become a well-known and trusted brand in the belting industry around the world.
Our ceaselessly innovative approach makes us anticipate tomorrow with curiosity and eagerness for what has yet to come. Each day fresh discoveries are being made in our Research and Development Department. New products are being tested, and refined. It has been this future-oriented approach which has brought us to where we are today.
We are looking forward to continuing this movement. Keep checking our blog for more in-depth support and helpful info, and of course, do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions.
