6 tips for joining conveyor belts on your own

Joining conveyor belts is a bit of a craft. When you perform the job on your own, without expert help, you may not know what to consider in order to reach optimal results. Below is a list that we hope can be helpful.

1. Read the user guide carefully and go over the equipment

Each joining system is accompanied by a case with a user guide. Thoroughly read the manual before you operate the joining system, so that you have knowledge about how to use it. Also inspect the equipment and make sure you have all the parts and that nothing is damaged.

2. Temperature and the choice of glue are more important than you might think

Ensure that the joining system has the right temperature for splicing. If you use a temperature that is too low, the ends will not stick as well and the splice could come apart. If the splice is glued, you should be certain that you use the right type of glue and check the expiration date. Make sure you apply the glue correctly, so that it does not get stuck on surfaces that need to remain dry and clean.

3. Joining is a craft

Conveyor belt splicing is a manual job, a craft that requires precision. You should therefore be very careful during each step of the joining process. It is important that the belt splices are straight. Crooked splices will cause unstable belt running, which in a worst case scenario will cause products to get stuck and lead to a breakdown.

4. Have you inspected the conveyor?

Remember to always check the conveyor before you tension the belt. Look over the calibration of the belt pulleys, rolls, spindles, profiles, and sliding beds to ensure that all parts are complete and clean.

5. Ensure correct tension

Tighten the belt and make sure the tension is correct. If it is too low, the tracking will be affected, the traction reduced, and the risk of products skidding increased. If it is too high, bearings might break, spindles bend, and the belt could go “off track” and tear.

6. A small screwdriver might cause big trouble

When you finish the job you should make sure that there are no loose parts left around the conveyor belt. Pack up the joining system tools into the case together with the user guide, and count your tools. A forgotten screwdriver could cause a disaster if it is stuck under the belt!
